Sigmund Freud developed the theory that religion is not about humanity finding God but humanity creating God. God is a projection of our needs and insecurities. Commenting on the bleakness of this view Freud said "I have not the courage to rise up before my fellow men as a fellow prophet, and I bow to their reproach that I can offer them no consolation: for at bottom that is what they are all demanding..."
